When was the last time you checked your ATEX documentation? Many asset owners do not have an immediate answer to that question. KH Engineering helps them with the ATEX-APK: a free tool that allows you to know in no time whether you still comply with laws and regulations.

Every employee has the right to a safe workplace. That is laid down by law. And because one workplace is not like another, there are also very different rules that employers must comply with. One of these sets of rules concerns the prevention of explosion risks as referred to in the European ATEX 153 Directive. This directive states that employers must identify and minimise the risks of explosions to their employees. The assessment must be documented and kept up to date, also when making changes to the process or installation. Companies in the Netherlands often use the standards NPR 7910-1 and 2 when defining ATEX zones.

New ATEX zoning

Editie04_ATEX APK_zonering‘It so happens that the Dutch practice guidelines for assessing explosion hazard zones (NPR 7910-1 and NPR 7910-2) have recently been revised. This may result in a different danger zone classification for installations. For example, a new zone has now been added: "inert area". Asset owners may now designate this zone as an explosion protected zone. This may have consequences for the equipment used there,' says Senior Consultant HSSE Twan van den Broek.

Passing inspection

‘Many companies don't know all the ins and outs of the ATEX legislation', Twan says. ‘We would like to help them with our expertise. That's why we offer the free 'ATEX APK'. Based on a short questionnaire, we can carry out an ATEX check to determine whether an organisation still complies with the law when it comes to working in areas with explosion risks. This way you will quickly know whether your ATEX documentation would stand up to a future inspection. Should adjustments be required, then the companies are completely free to have them carried out by KH Engineering or not. But at least they know we can take care of it for them!’
